Water Damage Questions, Answered Plainly

FAQ

Questions and answers

What does Remainingadopted Restoration actually do?

Remainingadopted Restoration is a referral service. You send a request or call, and we connect you with an independent provider in our network that serves Wilmington. The provider does the work, sets the price and signs the agreement with you. Remainingadopted Restoration does not perform repairs, drying or cleanup. Our job is to shorten your search, not to replace your judgment.

What should I expect when a provider arrives?

Expect an inspection first. The provider checks where the water came from, how far it spread and which materials are wet. Moisture meters and thermal cameras are common tools. You should then get a written scope: what will be extracted, what will be dried, what may need removal. Ask for the plan and a quote in writing before work begins.

What questions should I ask before I hire?

Ask before you sign. Is the provider licensed where required in North Carolina, and insured? Will they document moisture readings daily? What is the estimate based on, and what could change it? Who handles subcontracted work? A solid answer is specific and written down. Vague replies, pressure to sign on the spot or a refusal to put things in writing are red flags.

What is the difference between water extraction and structural drying?

Extraction removes standing water with pumps and vacuums. Structural drying comes next. It pulls moisture out of framing, subfloors, drywall and other materials using air movers and dehumidifiers. Both matter. A floor can look dry while the wood beneath holds moisture. In humid Wilmington summers, skipped drying invites mold, so ask how the provider confirms materials are truly dry.

Can I handle a flooded basement cleanup myself?

Small, clean-water spills, yes. Mop up, run fans and move belongings. Stop there if water is deep, came from a storm, sewer or ground runoff, or touched electrical outlets. Those jobs carry contamination and shock risks. Dry it, don't guess: surfaces that feel dry can still hold moisture. If in doubt, ask a local provider to assess it.

How much does water damage restoration cost?

Costs vary widely by job. Typical U.S. ranges run from a few hundred dollars for a small, contained leak to several thousand for multi-room or contaminated water. Size, water type, materials and drying time all matter. Get a written quote from the provider, and ask what is included. Compare scope, not just the total.

Will my homeowners insurance cover the damage?

It depends on your policy. Some policies may cover sudden damage, such as a burst pipe, but often exclude slow leaks or flooding. Check your policy and call your insurer. Providers can often help document damage with photos, moisture readings and notes for a claim. Ask about that early, before anything is removed or thrown away.

How can I prevent water damage at home?

Small problem first. Clear gutters and point downspouts away from the foundation. Check supply lines, water heaters and appliance hoses for wear. Keep crawl-space vents and vapor barriers in good shape. Test your sump pump before storm season. After heavy thunderstorms or ice storms, look for damp spots, musty smells and stained ceilings, and act early.
